To deepen the understanding of traditional Chinese abacus culture among international students in China, the School of International Education and Cooperation successfully hosted the Chinese Intangible Cultural Heritage Abacus Culture Experience on November 8 in Room 1204 of the Library Building. The event attracted enthusiastic participation from 50 international students from Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) countries.
As one of China’s intangible cultural heritages, the abacus is not just a calculation tool but also carries significant cultural and historical value. During the event, international students learned about the history and cultural background of the abacus and viewed a variety of abacuses, ranging from traditional wooden designs to modern plastic adaptations, each showcasing the unique charm of Chinese abacus culture. Under the guidance of instructors from Shenmo Education, students practiced basic operations such as addition and subtraction on the abacus and created their own personalized abacus as a keepsake.
At the conclusion of the event, the international students expressed their admiration for the ancient abacus culture and their appreciation for the profound depth of Chinese culture. Moving forward, the School of International Education and Cooperation will continue to serve as a bridge for cross-cultural exchange, offering international students more opportunities to engage with and appreciate the richness of traditional Chinese culture.
