Prerequisites for Internship of International Students
Clinical practice is an important part of medical teaching, which integrates theory with practice with a view to train and enhance the practical skills. The following requirements are to guarantee the successful completion of the compulsory rotatory internship of all the international students at North Sichuan Medical College.
1. Students must pass all the examinations of required and chosen optional subjects.
2. Students must pass HSK-4 examinations.
3. Students must clear all the tuition and fees.
4. Before internship, School of International Education and Cooperation should let the students familiarize themselves with all the regulations and requirements of the internship in order to train them the sense of self-management and self-learning.
5. Before leaving college for internship, students should complete the School-leaving form and return all the books and other things.

Chapter One Purpose and Requirements
Article One Internship is one of the important parts in the teaching plan for students majoring in MBBS program. It combines theory with practice and cultivates the correct mindset of clinical thinking and the ability to solve clinical problems independently. All MBBS students should follow the syllabus for internship and complete all the contents and meet all the requirements so as to achieve the ability to work independently and fulfill all the goals in the teaching plan.
Article Two This regulation applies to students who are doing internship in the Affiliated Hospital of North Sichuan Medical College. Other teaching hospitals can adjust the regulations according to their own situation.
Chapter Two Internship Procedures
Article Three Each teaching hospital receives interns from MBBS program of NSMC from mid June each year. Internship instruction and motivation should be carried out as planned. The team should be divided into groups and group leader should be elected. Intensive professional skill training should be done before the start of internship in order to improve the interns ’ operation ability systematically.
Article Four According to the requirements of the clinical practice program of North Sichuan Medical College, the clinical education hospital and the Department of Science and Education co-ordinate the clinical department rotation in accordance with the actual situation of the hospital. The Teaching and Research Section, Clinical Departments carry out the clinical teaching according to the arrangements.
Chapter Three Management of Internship Supervisors
Article Five Qualifications: Internship Supervisors must be registered staff of the hospital and holding doctor’s license. Trainees and doctors for continuing education are not qualified.
Article Six Paper documents of the arrangements of internship supervisors should kept in thearchive.
Article Seven Responsibilities of internship supervisors.
1. Teachers should strengthen teaching consciousness, enhance professional ability and teaching ability, be self-disciplined and exemplary for students, take the training of students as their responsibility, pay attention to education of ideological and professional ethics of the students.
2. Teachers should give theoretical lectures, do teaching rounds, discuss difficult cases and death case, guide medical documents writing, train clinical skills according to the teaching syllabus and teaching plan. During the whole teaching process, students are allowed to operate only under strict supervision.
3. In the clinical practice, students must be taught to protect the patient's safety, respect the patient's right to privacy and the right to know, and must not harm the rights and interests of the patients.
4. Improve teaching skills, combine theory with practice, carry out various forms of teaching activities, pay attention to the communication with students, and create a harmonious teaching atmosphere.
5.To take charge of the daily management and assessment of the students in practice, and give them a fair score
according to the students' usual performance, and make a practical and realistic appraisal opinion.
Chapter Four Management of Interns
Article Eight MBBS students are called interns after they arrive at their internship positions. Interns are both students and staff, and they are in the forefront of clinical work. They are required to follow the below-mentioned regulations:
1. Be neatly dressed, dignified and elegant; do not wear shorts, vest and slippers in the ward; girls do not wear heavy makeup or rings.
2. Develop good medical ethics, be responsible, be bold but cautious, care for patient gracefully and patiently. Do not affect the patient's treatment for the reason of learning.
3. Interns must practice in strict accordance with the practice of rotation arrangement, and may not change their group and department without permission.
4. Interns must follow the work discipline of the hospital, don’t be late for work, and don't leave early. For daily shift, interns should arrive at the department half an hour in advance to familiarize with the patients. Join the teachers in the ward for staff shift, and participate in the round with the medical team.
5. An intern has not obtained a professional doctor's certificate, and all the medical and surgical activities for the patient must be completed under the guidance and supervision of a senior doctor.
6. Medical record writing is one of the most important basic trainings for interns. It requires complete, accurate, clear and smooth writing. It is not allowed to change medical records at will.
7. Interns have a 24-hour accountability system. They must join their teachers to attend the ward night duty, the holiday duty and the rescue of critically ill patients.
8. During the internship, interns do not have winter and summer vacation and are not allowed to leave the hospital without any excuse. Weekends and national holidays are allowed to rest only with the permission of teaching faculty.

Chapter Five Practice and Training Management
In the course of practice and training, the teaching rounds, lectures and typical or difficult cases are three important teaching activities. Through the teaching activities, students can improve their clinical thinking ability, clinical teachers can strengthen the teaching consciousness and improve the quality of clinical teaching. Clinical departments should regularly record the interns ’signature for attendance and the secretary of the department should keep them in the archive.
Article Nine Ward Teaching Rounds
1. Ward teaching round is an important linkin the clinical teaching. The cases must have the value of teaching, which are typical cases (mainly frequently occurring cases and common diseases) or case conducive to the identification of a syndrome and can leave students a deep impression, exercise the clinical diagnosis and treatment.
2. The time and content of ward teaching rounds are determined by the department, at least 1 time every 2 weeks.
Article Ten Clinical Teaching (Lectures)
1. Clinical lectures compensate for lack of certain content in the textbooks or difficult problems students met in clinical practice. They consist of comprehensive and thematic lectures which inspire students' clinical thinking and help solve practical problems.
2. Types of lectures
( 1) The hospital-wide clinic teaching (Lecture) is presided by each clinical teaching hospital. Special topics should be assigned and teachers should be arranged by the teaching and research section. The teachers should have good theoretical basis and clinical experience. Before the lecture, we should consult the materials extensively, prepare lessons carefully, prepare teaching plans and lecture notes, and attach importance to the combination of theory and practice. All clinical interns participate.
(2) Small clinical lectures (Lectures) are arranged by the department and interns in the department participate in the lectures.
Article Eleven Discussion of Typical or Difficult Cases
1. Typical or difficult case discussion is held once a month, presided by doctors with intermediate or higher titles. All interns must participate.
2. Interns in charge of hospital beds must seriously prepare information, consult books and literature in each case and write the speech before the discussion under the guidance of the doctor in charge.
3. During the discussion of typical or difficult cases, the interns report their history, the physician in charge or the physician at the higher level make necessary complement. The interns who participate in the discussion should express their opinions and participate actively in the discussion.
4. After the discussion, the intern should review the theoretical knowledge according to thediscussion and absorb it in time.
Chapter Six Internship Assessment
Internship assessment consists of formative evaluation and summative assessment.
Article Twelve Formative Evaluation (60%)
1. This assessment is done by various internship departments during their internship.
2. The examination content is divided into medical ethics appraisal (10%), history taking, physical examination and medical records appraisal (10%), basic skills assessment (20%) (according to the selected project) and specialty theory examination (20%).
3. The assessment time: during each round of internship, after completion of the internship and before leaving each department.
4. Assessment results should be kept in paper archive.
Article Thirteen Summative Assessment
1. This assessment shall be organized by the Science and Education Section in clinical
teaching hospital, including time, result registration and so on.
2. The content of examination is divided into theoretical examination (20%) and skill test(20%).
Chapter Seven Internship Safety Management
Article Fourteen During the internship, the intern on night shift must be in the department and must not go out without permission.
Article Fifteen Participate in the recruitment activities outside the hospital or handle other affairs must strictly follow the leave system. Pay attention to personal safety. Interns should take sole responsibility for any accidents that occur off duty.
Article Sixteen Internship students should be subject to the arrangement and management of teaching staff during their internship. Any invasive medical practice shall not be carried out without authorization, and must be completed under the guidance of the teacher. Security risks should be reported in a timely manner in order to solve them as soon as possible, reduce errors and prevent accidents.
Article Seventeen Strengthen communication with patients and their relatives, deal properly with doctor-patient relationship, reduce or avoid conflicts between doctors and patients.
Chapter Eight Leave Management
Article Eighteen Interns should strictly follow the leave system during internship.
1. Those who ask for leave must fill in the leave form in person in advance and get approval by signature and stamping from the related department. For sick leave, the certificate of illness issued by outpatient office in practice hospital should be attached.
2. Time for leave
Within 1 day: Approved by the teacher in charge and the director or the secretary of the department.
Two to seven days: Submit a written application, approved by the teacher in charge and the teaching secretary of the practice department or the director of the department, and reported to the practice hospital for approval from the Science and Education Section.
More than seven days: After the approval of the internship department and the Science and Education Section, it will be submitted to the Internship Department of North Sichuan Medical College for approval.
3. After the approval process, one copy of approval should be handed to the Science and Education Section, and one copy to the secretary of the department.
4. Report back to the department after coming back from leave with the round ticket or other relevant proof.
5. Those who did not submit written leave form or did not report back to the department are considered as skipping internship.
6. Interns asking for leave should take full responsibility of their safety during leave.
7. Those who ask for leave without approval and leave without permission will face disciplinary reprimand; if the cases are serious, they will be punished in accordance with the Regulations for Internship of International Students.
Chapter Nine Punishment for Violation of Regulations
Article Nineteen Punishment for violation of regulations should follow the rules, be fair and open, adhere to the combination of punishment and education, and guide students to consciously abide by the regulations.
Article Twenty Students who have committed disciplinary activities and whose circumstances are minor and not enough to be punished shall be criticized and taught by the clinical teaching hospitals, the Science and Education Section and the internship departments where the students are practicing, so as to urge them to correct their mistakes.
Article Twenty-one In the course of internship, those who skip internship without reason will be reprimanded or punished based on the seriousness of the case.
1. 10- 19 hours (skipping 3 days): warning;
2. 20-29 hours (skipping 5 days): serious warning;
3. 30-39 hours (skipping 6 days): demerit;
4. 40-49 hours (skipping 7 days): hospital disciplinary probation
5. 50 hours and more (skipping 7 days or more):stop internship and be asked to go back to college. All the practice did before were invalid.
During the period of internship, skipping one day is considered as 6 hours of absence, and 2 hours of absence for those who skip ward rounds during holidays.
Article Twenty-two The following situations are considered as skipping internship without leave
1. Internship students did not follow the "practice rotation table" arrangement to do practice in the corresponding department (Group).
2. Interns do not follow the leave process and leave without permission.
3. Other cases of leaving hospital at will.
Article Twenty-three During internship, students who quarreled, fought and had other violations of regulations and laws will be given the appropriate punishment in accordance with seriousness.
Article Twenty-four During internship, students who do not respect teachers and staff, do not follow arrangement will be given appropriate punishment according to the seriousness.
Article Twenty-five Any other violations of discipline not listed in this chapter, but it should be given a disciplinary punishment should be dealt within accordance with the Codes of Internship for International Students of North Sichuan Medical College.
Article Twenty-six Punishment Procedures
1. Each teaching hospital deal with and confirm the violation of regulations of students.
2. Give appropriate punishment according to the seriousness of the case and the students ’attitude.
3. Those who are punished should hand in a written apology to the department and the Science and Education Section. They should also sign on the punishment decision for interns.
4. Those who skip internship should make up the time in the relevant department and then get the assessment results.
Article Twenty-seven Revocation of punishment
1. Those who get warning, serious warning, demerit, hospital disciplinary probation can apply for revocation of punishment at the end of observation period if they corrected their mistakes and did outstanding work during the observation period, and got training department approval. The application should be signed by the director of the department and approved by the Science and Education Section. Once lifted, the punishment will not be reported to the college. If the internship terminates before the observation period, the internship should be prolonged so as to lift the punishment according to the actual performance of the students. Otherwise, the punishment will be transferred to the college together with the archive.
2. Observation period for warning: 1 month; serious warning: 2 months; demerit: 3 months;hospital disciplinary probation:4 months.
Chapter Ten Supplementary Articles
Article Twenty-eight The present regulations are formulated by the School of International Education and Cooperation in accordance with the North Sichuan Medical CollegeCodes of Internship for International Students and the International Student Handbook, and are only suitable for MBBS students at North Sichuan Medical College.
Article Twenty-nine These Regulations shall come into force as of the date of promulgation. In the event of any conflict with the relevant administrative regulations promulgated before, these provisions shall prevail.

Codes of Internship for International Students
1. The intern must develop serve the wounded and sick wholeheartedly, have good medical ethics and rigorous style of work, correctly handle the relationship between learning and service, take pains to complete the graduation learning plan requirements, consolidate and improve the basic theory, basic knowledge and basic skills, cultivate a scientific way of thinking and independent analysis and the ability to solve problems.
2. The intern must have a strong sense of discipline, consciously abide by the state laws, comply with the rules and regulations of schools and hospitals, respect the hospital leadership and staff, strengthen unity and cooperation in all aspects.
3. Under the guidance of the doctors in charge, an intern will be responsible for 6-8 patients ’ diagnosis and treatment work (depending on the specific circumstances of the Department). An intern must respect the doctors in charge and obey their work guidance.
4. After the patient is hospitalized, under the guidance of the doctors in charge interns must take the medical history, do physical examinations and laboratory work (self-operation tests should be in accordance with the requirements of teaching), write complete medical records and diagnosis and treatment advice within 24 hours, timely complete the medical record of emergency patients. The content of medical record should be complete, accurate, focused, coherent and fluent and legible. In the course of the practice in each department, interns should write a number of copies of complete medical records (see syllabus) and send to the doctors in charge to correct.
5. Interns must be serious in the examination of patients. When male interns examine a female patient or an obstetric and gynecological patient, there must a third person present.
6. Interns must make the routine rounds of the wards together with the doctors in charge every morning. Report the medical history, physical examination and laboratory test results of new patients and propose diagnosis and treatment plan, and also report other patients ’ condition changes and further treatment advice to the doctors in charge. They should promptly record the views of senior doctors after the rounds.
7. Interns must frequently visit the wards, care for patients, timely notice the changes in the condition, the patients ’ diet, mental status and the implementation of nursing work. When the patient is found to have a special change, they should report it to the doctors in charge, and ask for advice.
8. Interns do make rounds in the wards in the afternoon or evening together with the doctors in charge of alone. They should understand the condition of the disease in a timely manner and make a good record (illness, treatment effect, senior physician examination, diagnosis and treatment advice, etc.).
9. Intern must get consent and guidance from the doctors in charge before any medical operations. If they have completely learnt the skills, they can operate independently. But when encountered difficulties, they should promptly consult senior doctors for solution. Interns should take part in nursing and medical work during internship.
10. Medical orders, prescriptions, laboratory examinations made by interns must be approved and signed by the doctors in charge to be valid. Interns shall not arbitrarily decide consultation, transfer or sign any certificates.
11. When patients and their family members ask about the diagnosis or prognosis, interns should follow the advice of senior doctors and patiently answer their questions. When a patient has poor prognosis, do not tell the patient himself/herself in order to avoid adverse effects.
12. Interns must summarize their own management of patients before transition (including history, experience, test results, treatment process and effect). If there are special circumstances, they should inform the next interns or doctors orally. The next interns or doctors should record the transition timely.
13. Interns must try their best to save the critical patients till the condition improves or confirmed death. They can leave only with the permission of the doctors in charge.
14. After the patient is discharged from hospital or died, interns should fill in the record together with the doctors in charge. If patient died, interns should record the situation before death.
15. Interns must pay attention to the quality of medical treatment. If there was a medical blunder, interns should report it in accordance with the procedures (department, teaching hospital, hospital office, the relevant departments of the school), and carefully check the cause of the accident. They should be given criticism or disciplinary action depending on the seriousness and their attitude.
16. Interns must strictly abide by the leave regulations. Leave can only be granted in special cases. When ask for leave, interns must follow the procedures mentioned below. The time and content missed because of leave must be complemented after the regular internship. The costs incurred should be borne by the interns themselves.
1)Time for leave

17. During holidays, interns should also go to the wards to check their own patients, complete daily medical work. After clearly informing the doctor on duty, they can leave. Unauthorized leave or overdue vacation shall be punished as absenteeism. Night shift and holiday duty follow the provisions of the practice hospital.

Regulations for Internship of International Students
Clinical practice is an important part of medical teaching, which integrates theory with practice with a view to train and enhance the practical skills. The following regulations (based on The Regulations for Internship of Students at North Sichuan Medical College) are to guarantee the successful completion of the compulsory rotatory internship of all the international students at North Sichuan Medical College.
Article One Preparation for internship
1. Students must pass all the examinations of required and chosen optional subjects.
2. Students must pass HSK-4 examinations.
3. Students must clear all the tuition and fees.
4. In accordance with "Interim Provisions on the Quality Control Standard of Medical Undergraduate Education (English Media) for Foreign Students in China", every year before June, School of International Education and Cooperation should cooperate with the Clinical Department and work out a detailed plan for internship, including the department, rotation, duration, management regulations and supervisors. The content, duration should defined by the internship syllabus and plan.
5. Before internship, School of International Education and Cooperation should let the students familiarize themselves with all the regulations and requirements of the internship in order to train them the sense of self-management and self-learning.
6. Elect group leaders for each group of interns.
7. Before leaving college for internship, students should complete the School-leaving form and
return all the books and other things.
Article Two Management of interns
1. Before internship, students must sign an internship agreement with the hospital. Under the guidance of the teacher, students must complete every necessary procedure and start internship in accordance with the unified arrangement of the teaching hospital.
2. At the beginning of the internship, students must be educated with the systems of responsibility, respect of leaders and staff as well as patients. Students must comply with the regulations of the hospital management such as water, electricity, comprehensive management, etc.
3. Students who are doing internship may not stay outside the hospital without the permission from the hospital. Should they do so, they should be responsible for all the damage and loss.
4. Group leaders should earnestly perform their duties, strengthen management, supervise interns law-abiding and prevent accidents. Help group members do their internship whole-heartedly and prepare for the exams of each department.
5. Follow all the regulations in the “Regulations for Internship of International Students” .
6. If the students have any problems during the internship, they should ask the related teacher for help.
7. When students finish their internship, they should summarize the internship and try to express their gratitude to the teachers and staff in a proper manner.
8. Before leaving the hospital, return all the things of the hospital and compensate for all the damage.
9. Students who have finished their internship should come back to college at the designated time. They can not come back to college any time they wish.
10. When all the students come back to college after internship, there should be a meeting summarizing the internship.

Ways of Assessment of Internship for International Students
Chapter One General Provision
Assessment refers to the test of theory and skills during internship made by the doctors in charge in each department. A General Internship Summary is made by the doctors in charge in each department and the teacher in charge of Study Management in the hospital, which guarantees successful completion of rotator internship. The General Internship Summary should record the marks and comments, which should be sealed and brought back to School of InternationalEducation and Cooperation. The ways of assessment of internship are as follows.
Chapter Two Ways of Assessment
Assessment of internship includes two parts: department exams and basic clinical skills.1. Department exams
Three times a year: For clinical medicine, five subjects will be tested: Internal Medicine, Surgery, Gynecology andObstetrics, Pediatrics and ENT. After finishing one or two departments, theory test will be held with papers from the Test Paper Bank of our college. The paper will be marked by the hundred mark system.
2. Basic clinical skills exams
It is scheduled in April of the next year. The date of exam will be notified one week before the exam. The group of invigilators consists of doctors (having at least associate professor title) from Internal Medicine, Surgery, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Pediatrics departments from our affiliated hospital. The contents of exam follow the guideline of Internship Syllabus, focusing on clinical techniques of Internal Medicine, Surgery, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Pediatrics, including major medical record writing, physical examination, laboratory test results interpretation, image film reading, ECG analysis and diagnosis, clinical handling ability. The examination papers and original records are collected and saved by the medical college, and the examination results are based on the hundred mark system.
Chapter Three Percentage of Marks
Internship graduation exam marks consist of three parts:
1. Daily performance: 20%. The doctors in charge assess the interns according in the aspects of medical ethics, discipline, task completion. Those who violate the regulations will lose 5 to 20 points. If the case is serious, the alleged intern is regarded as failure and cannot graduate as scheduled.
2. Theory: 40%.
3. Basic clinical skills: 40%.
The marks of the three parts of exams are added and recorded in the student’s file. Those who fail in the exam cannot graduate.
Chapter Four Award and Punishment
To guarantee the quality of internship and education, promote the awareness of self-management of each intern and the team, NSMC will select candidates for excellent interns and teams. The qualifications are as follows:
1. Excellent intern must strictly abide by the rules and regulations of the college and abide by the rules and regulations and labor discipline in the practice hospital, having no lateness, leaving early, absence, coming back to work beyond schedule after vacation or leave, or leaving job before schedule. Excellent intern must actively participate in the beneficial activities organized by the hospital, finish internship according to the rotation plan, complete all tasks in each department, have full attendance in all the lectures required in the hospital. The comment from each department should be “excellent” . Excellent intern must treat patients with good and professional attitude, respect teachers, rescue patients actively, have no fighting, get no punishment and criticism from the College and hospital during the internship.
2. Excellent practice team should have good overall ideological quality, professional level, organizational discipline and dormitory management. The whole team should have relatively good practice examination and assessment of clinical skills scores; more than 70% interns are excellent interns, no punishment. The team captain should set an example, actively keep in touch with the hospital and help solve all the problems. S/He should timely report whatever problems arise to the hospital, should not hide and tolerate any mistakes. S/He should have proper social interaction. The whole team should have no fighting, theft, alcohol abuse, no stay outside the designated place or keep others overnight in the dormitory. Excellent practice team should actively participate in some beneficial activities organized by both the hospital and the community.
Excellent intern and team are selected at the end of the internship by School of International Education and Cooperation. NSMC will give honorary certificate.

Medical Ethics Evaluation Standards for Interns
Noble and strict medical ethics are prerequisites for qualified doctors. Interns should consciously develop good medical ethics in clinical practice. Medical ethics appraisal is mainly based on the clinical performances. Teachers in charge should solicit opinions on ethics, work performance, work discipline, solidarity, respect, courtesy and task completion, etc. on the basis of each department at the end of the practice and give a comprehensive evaluation of the interns. The evaluation results serve as an important part for the selection of outstanding graduates. Those who failed in Medical ethics evaluation are regarded as failure in the practice. They should repeat the practice in the particular department. If they pass, they are allowed to graduate. If they failed again, they are not allowed to graduate.
Part One Evaluation Standards
I. Good medical ethics, treat and heal the sick.
1. Uphold the belief that doctors are for the health of the public and care for each patient. Avoid any words and behavior which can damage the physical and mental health of patients. It is strictly forbidden to aggravate the patient's pain and illness for the reason of learning.
2. Understand the patient's physical and mental condition, promote the patient's mental health, help patients to increase the confidence to overcome the disease.
3. Care patients, treat patients equally, do not abuse your position, do not take gifts from patients.
II. Be strict with yourself and work hard.
1. Establish meticulous work style, have close observation of patients, be clear about the condition, and report the patients ’ condition to the doctor in charge timely.
2. Under the guidance of doctors in charge, strictly fo llow the instructions in all technical practices, and actively participate in various medical activities.

Pass: Meet basically the above requirements or have minor disciplinary behaviors but repent after criticism.
Fail: Fail to meet the above requirements or have minor disciplinary behaviors and show no repentance.
